Freestyle
Full Linux VMs for AI agents with live forking of running VMs, memory-preserving hibernation, VPCs and nested virtualization. The most capable “real VM” for agents, with live forking; a strong pick for complex coding agents.
Overview
Freestyle offers full Linux VMs rather than containers or minimal microVMs, running on its own bare-metal hardware. That means agents can run Docker, nested VMs, FUSE and eBPF — things many sandboxes block. Running VMs can be live-forked with memory intact and hibernated so only storage is billed.
Default-deny networking with per-VM rules and VPC support make it a security-conscious choice for long-running agents. Freestyle is one of the migration targets named in Runloop’s 2026 wind-down guides.
Notable
- Named as a migration target in Runloop’s wind-down guides, with credits for Runloop customers.
- Backed by Floodgate, Y Combinator and Two Sigma Ventures, per its site.

Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Your agent needs Docker, nested virtualization or kernel features
- You want to fork a running VM including memory
- You want default-deny networking and VPCs
Trade-offs
- TypeScript-only SDK
- No published compliance attestations
- GPU support not documented
Best for: Long-running coding agents that need full VMs — Docker, nested virtualization — with fork and hibernate.
